Physical Education Program

Philosophy

The Physical Education Program at Erskine College is dedicated to preparing students to be leaders in the field of physical education, recognizing that physical education encompasses nurturing the mental physical, affective, and spiritual growth and development of all students.

Mission

Our mission is to provide a learning environment that nurtures the mental, physical affective, and spiritual growth of our students and effectively prepares them for advanced learning, satisfying employment, and healthy, productive lives.

The Competent Physical Educator:

  • Is dedicated to helping children achieve happier, healthier, more productive lives.
  • Knows that the child’s self-concept is the greatest single factor in academic success.
  • Knows that physical fitness, physical effectiveness, and body image are independently related to the child’s self-concept.
  • Understands that the human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
  • Knows the principles of exercise and nutrition.
  • Is a health/fitness enthusiast and a role model for healthy Christian living.
  • Understands the importance of physical activity as part of a well-balanced lifestyle.
  • Realizes that motivation is the key to life, and motivation begins with knowledge.
  • Teaches physical education classes wherein all students are involved, all are challenged, and all are successful!

“Thank you for the wonderful academic background I received from the PE Department and the motivation from your living example of a healthy lifestyle.  I completed a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science, and I could not be where I am today without the foundation I received at Erskine.” ~ Leslie Stanton ‘94
