About Snapper's
While formerly named the Canteen, committee members thought
it would be appropriate to put the name to a vote. The administration
planned to call it "The Commons," which would imply
a gathering area for students. However, the committee invited
student suggestions.
"We assembled the most popular names, and put it to
a vote within the committee and Snapper's won."
While
the name "Snapper's" means little or nothing to
a non-Erskine student, the man behind the name is a legend
at Erskine. Often arriving before the morning light, he is
in charge of managing both Watkins Student Center and the
newly renovated "Snapper's."
"I've worked here since 1974," says Snapper "and
I think the renovations are wonderful."
Born Willie Crawford Jr., "Snapper" says the nickname
came from a woman who used to mind him as a child. "She's
always called me Snapper," says Crawford.
"It's something I never expected, but it's a real honor
to have this place named after me."
