Interesting Facts
Erskine was founded by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and remains affiliated with that denomination today, although students come from many different denominations – the largest group is Baptist.
Erskine has been consistently ranked among the nation’s top liberal arts colleges in the U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” yearly report.
Fall 2004 enrollment marked a high water mark for the college, which achieved two years early a long-range strategic planning goal of having no fewer than 600 students. The total number of applications increased 63 percent from 1996-97 to 2005-06.
Minority enrollment increased 70 percent from 1996-97 to 2005-06.
The Drummond Center, established to promote statesmanship in South Carolina, was initiated by Erskine officials and for the past several years, an award has been presented in the name of longtime state Sen. John Drummond of Greenwood. Award winners have included a United States senator, a federal court judge, a business leader, and mayors of several larger South Carolina cities. Among the keynote speakers have been Tim Russert of “Meet the Press,” Newsweek Managing Editor Jon Meacham, U.S. Sen. John McCain and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Erskine offers a number of scholarship opportunities, including two E.B. Kennedy scholarships that are awarded each year. The EBK program provides a full scholarship that includes tuition, room, board and fees minus other scholarships or grants. Hundreds of students vie for these scholarships each year.
A four-week Winter Term is included on the Erskine academic calendar in January that allows students to expand their classrooms beyond Due West and the comforts of home.
Erskine recently completed its most significant capital fund-raising effort, the Gold Campaign. More than $40 million was raised, shattering the $36.8 million goal.
