H1N1 Information

Dear Erskine Community,

In light of the H1N1 situation, please note the following:

  1. The most recently updated guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are being followed in an effort to protect students, faculty, and staff.
  2. Educational information will be posted around campus and on the Erskine website.
  3. Aramark has placed additional hand sanitizers in buildings around campus.
  4. Those individuals who suspect they are infected are strongly encouraged to be tested immediately.
  5. All confirmed cases of H1N1 among students are to be reported to Health Services (call 379-8823 or email Reba Stille at rstille@erskine.edu) immediately. Faculty and staff are asked to contact Hope Harrison (call 379-6546 or email at harrison@erskine.edu).

To reduce the possibility of becoming infected:

  1. Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  2. Always cover coughs and sneezes.
  3. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  4. Do not drink after other people.
  5. Avoid contact with infected individuals.

Symptoms to watch for:

  1. Fever
  2. Sore throat
  3. Cough
  4. Stuffy or runny nose
  5. Body aches
  6. Headache
  7. Chills
  8. Fatigue

Locations for testing:

  1. At the first appearance of symptoms, students should report to the infirmary for testing (no charge).
  2. Faculty and staff who wish to be tested locally may want to go to a family doctor, Due West Family Medicine ($39 charge) or one of the area health departments.

If diagnosed:

  • Students should contact Health Services immediately to devise a plan for going home to recover or remaining on campus in an alternate environment.
  • Before returning to a normal routine, it is imperative that students, faculty, and staff be fever-free for at least 24 hours.

Important items to have on hand:

  1. Non-aspirin pain reliever/fever reducer (Tylenol, Advil)
  2. Anti-bacterial soap
  3. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  4. Cough drops
  5. Thermometer

For detailed information on the H1N1 virus, go to www.cdc.gov.

Please feel free to contact Student Services with any questions or concerns about this situation. Let’s work together to keep Erskine a healthy, safe environment.
