E.B. Kennedy Scholarship finalists compete for top two awards

Twenty-four students from five states are spending three days on the Erskine College campus this week as finalists for E.B. Kennedy Scholarships.

Students from South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Maryland arrived in Due West Thursday to compete for the only two full scholarships available at Erskine.

“We have 24 truly remarkable young people on our campus competing for the E.B. Kennedy Scholarship,” Director of Admissions Bart Walker said. “These young people are not only excellent students, but also are leaders in their churches, schools and communities.”

Named in honor of beloved Erskine alumnus, teacher and respected minister Dr. E.B. Kennedy, two full scholarships are awarded to high school seniors demonstrating leadership and service in their communities, churches and schools. The value of each scholarship, over four years, currently exceeds $95,000, Walker said.

After registering Thursday afternoon, the finalists attended a dinner in the Founders Room of Moffatt Dining Hall, followed by a get-together and games for finalists, scholars and admissions office staff at the home of Erskine President Dr. John Carson and his wife, Sarah Ellen.

Following breakfast Friday, interviews began at the Daniel•Moultrie Science Center, lasting until noon, when a luncheon for finalists and selected faculty members was hosted by the admissions office staff.

Interviews continued Friday afternoon, and will be followed by dinner in the Founders Room with a “Due Western” theme. A bowling outing for finalists and scholars is to take place after dinner.

Finalists will be interviewed during morning and afternoon sessions Saturday.

Nearly 140 E.B. Kennedy Scholarship semifinalists and their parents visited the campus in December and 24 were named finalists and invited back.

Crosland Stuart, chairwoman of the E.B. Kennedy Scholarship Program, will announce the two winners of the E.B. Kennedy Scholarship later this month.
The E.B. Kennedy Scholarships are funded by the Edward C. Stuart Foundation Inc. in Bartow, Fla., and an E.B. Kennedy Scholarship Fund.
