Erskine College receives $30,000 in grants from Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation

Erskine College has announced the receipt of a $23,500 grant from the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation to be used for financial aid.

Students in financial need who have demonstrated a commitment to service above self and service to the community are eligible.

Additionally, the Sullivan Foundation has made a grant of $6,500 to the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Endowment at Erskine College. This endowment was established in 1998 to provide support in perpetuity for Sullivan Scholars at Erskine College.

"The Sullivan Foundation has been a major contributor to our scholarship program for many years and has enabled many students to attend Erskine," Vice President for Development Lee Logan said. "The fact that they are now contributing to both annual scholarships and the endowment scholarship fund makes their gifts even more valuable."

The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, now located in Oxford, Miss., was chartered in the state of New York in 1934. Its purpose is to promote service to others and service to the broader community, values exemplified by Algernon and Mary Mildred Sullivan, the parents of the organization's founder.

"We are very grateful for the privilege to recognize the Sullivan Foundation's significant role in higher education and assist deserving students," Logan said.

In addition to providing support for financial aid to small private colleges located primarily in the Appalachian region, the Sullivan Foundation also collaborates with 53 southeastern colleges and universities in presenting awards in memory of Algernon and Mary Mildred Sullivan. These awards recognize exceptional qualities of service and are presented each year to a graduating senior and to a non-student member of the college community.

Receiving the awards in 2004 at Erskine College were graduating seniors Peter Bechtel of LaBelle, Fla., and Caroline Culp of Spartanburg, as well as two 1939 graduates, Hope Mills Safrit of Thomasville, N.C., and Dr. Robert W. Miller of Kingsport, Tenn.

"We are always delighted to be recipients of the Sullivan Foundation's generosity," Executive Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Donald Weatherman said. "They provide grants to a very special group of colleges and it is a real credit to Erskine College to be one of them."
