Spring arts season includes special February concert

The Erskine College Department of Music will present "'With Hearts and Hands and Voices': Glorifying God for the Service of Dr. and Mrs. Ruble to the Erskine Community" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18 in Memorial Hall.

This concert, the first spring term performance by Erskine musicians, is being offered while Erskine Board of Trustees members are on campus for their February meeting.

Among other highlights of the spring arts season are a Fine Arts Series performance at 8 p.m. on Feb. 24 by the Amelia Piano Trio and a voice recital by Lydia Crone Howery, a member of the Class of 1999, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, both in Memorial Hall.

The Spring Choral Concert will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30; the Erskine College Chamber Singers take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15; Sinfonia, Erskine's instrumental ensemble, will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 23, with Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Brad Parker as guest pianist; and the Choraleers will give a concert presentation of Godspell at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 30, and again at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1.

All music performances will be in Memorial Hall unless otherwise announced.

The Erskine Players, directed by Professor of English Dr. Brad Christie, will stage "Curse You, Jack Dalton!" in Lesesne Auditorium April 14-17, with performances set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday, at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, and at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

"It's a spoof of classic Victorian melodramas, complete with despicable villain (two, in fact), a helpless heroine, a dashing hero, a fortune up for grabs (two, in fact), and a surprise ending that will have everyone in tears — of laughter!" Christie said. "We'll also have vaudeville-style olio acts: magic, juggling, singing, who knows what else."

The Bowie Arts Center’s focus this spring is on students. The Erskine College Student Open Call Art Show is scheduled for March 8-31. "This is a juried open call show for all students, regardless of major," Bowie Arts Center Director Jan Walker said. "Purchase prizes will be awarded for the top three entries."

Works by senior art majors Garison Plourde, Elizabeth Manus and Alyssa Pierce will be exhibited April 5-22, and senior art majors Becky Fick, Ted Aslund, Chanel Baldwin and Katie Galloway display their works April 26-May 15. Walker said the senior exhibits, a requirement for graduation, feature the students’ work over the last four years of study.
