Women's soccer wins pair of national awards

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has honored the Erskine College women’s soccer team with a pair of awards for sportsmanship and academics.

The team was awarded the Team Ethics Award of Merit Bronze Certificate for the fall 2005 season.

To be eligible for the award, a team must receive between only six and 10 yellow or red cards during seasonal play. Gold and Silver awards are offered for fewer than six cards in a season.

Erskine received only nine cards during the 2005 season.

Erskine Head Women’s Soccer Coach said the award "demonstrates the type of players and team we have at Erskine.

"Our primary focus on the field is to play to our highest potential within the spirit of the game. Our players are focused on accomplishing goals that we set during training," he said. "What we do on and off the field means a great deal to me and I am extremely proud that we have been recognized."

Erskine was also one of 316 intercollegiate soccer programs awarded the 2004-05 Team Academic Award by the NSCAA.

To qualify for the Team Academic Award, a team must post a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the 2004-05 academic school year. The Lady Fleet compiled a 3.25 GPA.

"I am very pleased with the team’s performance as this award demonstrates that our student-athletes work extremely hard on and off the field," Lipovetsky said. "I expect a great deal from all of them and I think it shows a lot of character that the team can put forth the effort in the classroom and the soccer field. Our student-athletes have a reputation of maintaining high academic standards and this is something that I would definitely like the team to continue to receive."

The Lady Fleet recently had five players named to the Academic All-CVAC team — Katy Jackson, Julie Jefferson, Jamie Locke, Jodie Locke and Anna Winters.

The awards cap a solid year for the women's soccer program, during which the team finished fifth in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC). The Lady Fleet also advanced to the quarterfinals of the CVAC tournament.

Anna Weldon was named first team All-CVAC, and Virginia Walker was named second team All-CVAC.

Aisha Reid was named CVAC Player of the Week during the regular season and also led the conference in overall points.

The team finished the season with a 9-11-1 record.

The members of the Erskine women's soccer team are also active in the community.

The squad played in a volleyball game against teachers from Woodfields Elementary in Greenwood to raise money for the United Way. The team is scheduled to play a kickball game against those same teachers on March 3 – again to raise money for the United Way.

Lipovetsky said the team also assists the TOPSoccer program in Greenville with the South Carolina Youth Soccer Association (SCYSA) and the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA). TOPSoccer is the outreach program for soccer and provides opportunities for people with disabilities to play soccer.

The Lady Fleet is playing a slate of matches this spring, including an alumni event April 22  sponsored by the men's and women's teams.

The team signed seven players to National Letters of Intent and one to a Letter of Commitment.
