Erskine wins first "Blood Bowl" challenge against Anderson University

Erskine was declared the winner of last week's "Blood Bowl" blood drive competition against Anderson University in a halftime ceremony Wednesday during a closely-contested men's basketball game.

Participants donated a total of 182 pints of blood to AnMed Health during the Valentine's Day drive.

Erskine College and Seminary President Dr. Randall T. Ruble and Anderson University President Dr. Evans P. Whitaker were present for the festivities at Belk Arena in the Galloway Physical Activities Center. Greg Johnson of AnMed Health presented a silver bowl to Ruble.

Dean of Students Dr. Robyn Agnew, who serves as co-director of Erskine Wellness with Dr. Steve Lowe, thanked the Wellness Advisory Committee for assistance with coordinating the Blood Bowl, and praised committee member Shawn Marler's "amazing organization and publicity" for the event.

"We were thrilled with the turnout," Agnew said. "Greg Johnson said this was the biggest blood drive on either of our campuses ever and we helped more than 325 patients."

With a possible 1,345 donors, Agnew said, Anderson contributed 86 pints of blood, and with 762 possible donors, Erskine gave 96 pints. "So we did better in both percentage and number of donors." Agnew said.

In addition to the friendly competition with Anderson University, Erskine donors vied with each other for various prizes. Marler announced winners in a number of categories.

A competition among the four classes for a $100 cash prize was led by the Class of 2010, with 17.96 percent participation, followed closely by the Class of 2011 with 17.94 percent.

Among residence halls, Kennedy Dormitory had the highest percentage of residents donating, 26 percent, and won an ice cream social, "pint for pint," Marler said. Carnegie was close behind with 22 percent participation.

In a competition among campus literary societies with at least 20 percent of members donating, the Chi Lambda Sigma Women, with a 27 percent participation rate, won the drawing for a $100 cash prize.

The Society of Physics Students, with 33 percent participation, won a drawing for another $100 cash prize in the category of educational or performing organizations.

Among faith-based and common interest organizations, the Dead Philosophers Society, with 50 percent participation, won the drawing for $100.

In a drawing for Erskine faculty and staff donors, Polly Jones won a six-month membership in the Abbeville Area Medical Center's wellness program.

Among seminary students, Meghan Smith and John Paul Marr won a drawing for Subway gift cards.

The celebration in Galloway featured free snacks for both Erskine and Anderson students. The winners of next year's contest will be announced during a game at Anderson University, with similar hospitality extended to Erskine visitors. Meanwhile, the silver bowl remains with Erskine.

"We look forward to the Blood Bowl becoming an annual community service tradition," Agnew said.

Members of the Wellness Advisory Committee in addition to Agnew, Lowe and Marler include Dr. Chrystal Bruce, Shanon Jackson, Dr. Mary-Ruth Marshall, the Rev. Paul Patrick and Jan Walker.
