AAUW recognizes Erskine College, high school students

The Due West Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) honored high school students from Abbeville and McCormick counties as well as Erskine College students March 2 at the annual AAUW Student Recognition Banquet.

Students from Abbeville, Calhoun Falls, Dixie and McCormick high schools received awards. Fourteen students from Erskine College also received academic award certificates during the banquet in the Bell Conference Room of the Watkins Student Center.

Erskine faculty and staff members active in the Due West branch of AAUW include Edith Brawley, cataloger and archivist at McCain Library; Professor Emerita of Bible and Religion Dr. Margaret Cubine; and Professor Emerita of Biology Dr. Jan Haldeman.
Haldeman presented the award certificates, and Erskine alumna Sarah Kennerly introduced this year's speaker, Jeannie Dove Knight, a member of the Erskine College Class of 1966.

Knight spoke about patriotism and how it can be lived out, urging students to participate in the democratic process. "I hope you'll consider running for office someday," she said.

Elected mayor of Due West in 1985, while her husband, Dr. Jim Knight, was a vice president at Erskine, Jeannie Knight was the first woman to serve the town in that role. She recalled that when Harry Stille, then serving as mayor, decided not to run for re-election, she started asking other Due West citizens to become candidates, and then was talked into running herself.

The Due West Branch of AAUW has sponsored the Student Recognition Banquet annually since 1959. AAUW, established in 1881, is composed of graduates of four-year colleges and universities dedicated to helping women achieve equity and success.
