03.28.05 From left, Esther Udall, T.J. Ellis, Katie Ellis and Justin Eason Campus music club to give community concert Members of one of Erskine's newest clubs, the a cappella ensemble "Immix," plan to offer a free community concert Tuesday, April 5, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The group will share the stage with "Southern Accents," an a cappella group from Clemson University, for the event. Made up of both men and women, Immix focuses on pop music. The 16-member club was chartered in 2004 and has performed at a number of Erskine events, including Alumni Day, Family Day, Junior Day, ODK banquets and Board of Trustees luncheons. "We sing to support and represent Erskine College," said Drew Carlisle of Essex Junction, Vt., a sophomore who serves as president of Immix. Despite some dozen campus appearances, however, "I am sure some students are still unaware of our existence," Carlisle said. He hopes the joint performance with Clemson's a cappella singers, also 16 in number, will introduce Immix to more students. "After watching the Southern Accents in concert many times at Clemson, I contacted their president about collaborating for an a cappella invitational here at Erskine," Carlisle said. "The concert will be a lot of fun, featuring an established visiting a cappella group, and the Erskine upstart, Immix." Associate Professor of Music Dr. John Warren, who conducts the Erskine College Choraleers, is the club's sponsor. "Immix is a separate entity from the Erskine College vocal program," Carlisle notes. "Our late-night practices allow students who do not have time in their daily schedule the opportunity to sing together. "Immix is open to the entire student body by audition," he added. "It is a choir dedicated to having fun and making music together." How did they come up with their name? Carlisle said the group took a vote. "'Immix' is an English word meaning 'to blend intimately,'" he said. "This word fit us perfectly, taking on a double meaning musically and fraternally." The organization of Immix is simple and suits the group's needs. "Our constitution calls for two music directors, a president and a treasurer," Carlisle said. As president, Carlisle serves as a liaison with the Erskine administration to purchase music, plan the performance schedule, raise funds and acquire equipment. Music directors for Immix are sophomores Amy Dawson of Mooresville, N.C., and T.J. Ellis of Donalds. Sophomore Steven Ragan of Spartanburg serves as treasurer. Carlisle said Immix sings a wide range of pop music. "For example, last semester’s pieces included songs by Guster, Norah Jones, and Maroon 5." Plans for Immix following next week's concert include a few performances, but Carlisle said members will be concentrating on recording, using a state-of-the-art microphone they received from the Parent Association Council wish list committee, which is also used for performances. "We hope to produce an album by the end of the semester," Carlisle said. But Carlisle and his fellow singers are thinking and planning beyond spring semester for the club's future. "Immix's main purpose for recording is to send clips to the ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella) for acceptance into competition," he explained. "Because only one of our members is a senior we will retain our repertoire, group dynamic and blend next year." Carlisle said in addition to upcoming performances and recording a CD, Immix is also working on a Web page and hopes to lay the groundwork for "an extremely strong year" in 2005-06. Other members of Immix include Brandy Brock, Blair Christie, Sara Curtiss, Katie Ellis, Tyler Griesman, Tyler Griffin, Austin Johnston, Helena Korzun, Josh Meador, Kate McDonald, Annie McMillan and Esther Udall. |
