03.28.06 'Greek Week' kicks off today at Erskine The literary societies at Erskine College are co-sponsoring a series of events this week to spotlight the organizations during "Greek Week." There are seven literary societies on campus — Euphemian, Philomathean and Chi Lambda Sigma for men and Athenian, Euphemian, Philomathean and Chi Lambda Sigma for women. The societies are governed by the Intersociety Council, which plans "Greek Week." The societies are designed as social and service organizations. Intersociety Council Chair Danielle Bauer, a senior from Conway, said the week is a "tradition to boost comradrie among all the societies." The other council officers are senior Julie Hall of Due West (vice chair), junior Kristine Malson of Florence (secretary) and senior Melissa Woods of Suwanee, Ga. (treasurer). "Greek Week" kicks off tonight at 7 with a volleyball tournament, followed Wednesday by Open Mic Night at the Hanger beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, a kickball tournament will take place, beginning at 7 p.m. There is no scheduled event for Friday, but on Saturday, a dance (toga party) will take place beginning at 9 p.m. at Easy's in Greenwood. Bauer said last year's dance drew several hundred students. "Greek Week" activities conclude Sunday with Field Day at Robinson Field. Bauer said the tournaments and Field Day activities will serve as competitions among the societies during the week. The Philomathean men and women were victors in last year's competition. Besides "Greek Week," the Intersociety Council also plans games during Freshman Orientation Week, watches over discipline issues among the societies, supervises Rush activities and approves Rush calendars. |
