Guster
Annual Spring Fling set for May 5 on the Mall
Spring Fling 2007 is planned for May 5 on the Erskine College campus. The main feature of the annual event will be an evening concert with the bands Guster, The Format and The Urban Sophisticates.
"Erskine College is proud to welcome Guster, The Format, and The Urban Sophisticates to our campus on May 5," Erskine Entertainment Board President Ryan Bowles said.
"We are also especially happy to welcome those interested in visiting our campus to attend the show. We are expecting one of the biggest and most diverse shows in a long time, and are working hard to accommodate all of our guests."
The concert begins at 8:15 p.m. on the Mall.
Guster is an alternative rock band originally formed in the Boston, Mass., area by members Ryan Miller (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards), Adam Gardner (guitar, vocals, bass, keyboards), and Brian Rosenworcel (drums/percussion). Joe Pisapia (bass, guitar, keyboards, banjo, lap steel guitar, harmonica, vocals) has since joined the band.
In 1994, Guster independently recorded its first album, "Parachute." Two years later, the band independently recorded its second album, "Goldfly."
The band signed with Sire Records and re-released "Goldfly." Subsequent studio releases have been "Lost and Gone Forever" (1999), "Keep It Together" (2003) and "Ganging Up On the Sun" (2006).
The Format is a rock band formed by Arizona natives Nate Ruess and Sam Means. Their style can be considered a mixture of both pop and alternative, and is difficult to place in any one particular genre because of their use of various stylistic influences.
Means and Ruess are the foremost members of the band, but they tour and record with Mike Schey, Mark Buzard, Don Raymond, and Sean McCall.
The duo's first single, aptly titled "The First Single," from their five-song demo, "EP," became locally popular and led to the two signing with Elektra Records in 2002.
Their first studio album, "Interventions + Lullabies," was released in October 2003 and was very successful in the Phoenix area and sold more than 80,000 copies nationally.
After Elektra folded, The Format released a second EP, "Snails," with sister label Atlantic Records in April 2005. The Format was dropped by Atlantic. Upon completing the album, called "Dog Problems," Ruess and Means decided to release it themselves under the newly established Vanity Label. "Dog Problems" was released in stores on July 11, 2006.
The Urban Sophisticates are a live hip-hop band formed in Greensboro, N.C. In 2002, just shortly after The Roots had made their mark on live hip-hop, The Urban Sophisticates began creating a stir around the east coast.
During the band's short existence, they have shared the stage with acts such as The Toasters, Blindside, Sixpence None the Richer, and Switchfoot. They have also been seen on the WB's "Buster Brown" show.
The Urban Sophisticates won the Disc Makers Independent Music World Series (IMWS) Southeast showcase at the Velvet Underground in the Hard Rock Café in Atlanta, Ga. As the grand prize winners, The Urban Sophisticates took home their share of $250,000 in prizes, including recording gear, instruments, CD manufacturing services, and more.
Band members are Benton James (MC), Aaron James (vocals), Jeremy Denman (trumpet), Sal Mascali (trombone), Ben Perkins (guitar), Ricky Nxumalo (bass), and Romondo Jessup (drums).
The band has released two albums, "The Urban Sophisticates," and "The Coward's Anthem."
Tickets are free with valid ID for Erskine students, faculty and staff. Tickets are $8 for alumni and $12 for the general public.
Bowles said tickets are available now and he is encouraging the purchase of tickets online at http://www.erskine.edu/student-life/springfling.shtml
"I would also like to encourage people to show up as early as possible during the day
when student organizations will be sponsoring multiple events centered around X-Treme Air, a skydiving simulator that will be free for all who attend," Bowles said.
X-Treme Air will be available from 1-4 p.m.
