Fleet Knock off Augusta State in Baseball Action

DUE WEST, SC---Erskine scored nine runs in the first four innings and went on to an 11-6 victory over Augusta State in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Grier Field.

The Jaguars scored first with a two run home run in the top of the first, but the Fleet would answer in the bottom half when Matt Schneider would drive in two runs with a one out single. Erskine would explode in for five runs in the second capped off bay a two RBI double from Shelton Cisson. The double gave Shelton his 81st. of his career, breaking the NCAA Division II career record. Erskine would add single runs in the next two innings and two more runs in the sixth to push their lead to 11-2. The Jaguars would mount a come back in the seventh, scoring four runs to cut the lead to five, but Alex O’Quinn would come in relief and get the strike out to end the rally.

The Fleet was led at the plat by Schneider who was 3-4 with three RBI’s, while Keith Hill was 3-5 with two RBI’s. Evan Westmoreland added three hits and Ryan Price and Chris Biguenet each had two hits.

The Fleet improve to 35-22 overall with the win, while Augusta State falls to 26-24.

 

Cisson Breaks NCAA Hits Record, Ties Doubles Record

DUE WEST, SC---Shelton Cisson slugged his way into the record books this past weekend at the CVAC baseball tournament, breaking the NCAA Division II career hits record and tying the career doubles record.

Cisson went into the tournament needing six hits and four doubles two break both of the records, and he stepped up big for the Fleet in the tournament. In the first, he was 2-4 with a double and two RBI’s in Erskine’s 10-3 victory over Anderson to put him four hits and three doubles away. The following day, The Fleet faced top seeded Mount Olive, and Shelton put the Fleet on his back going 3-4 with two home runs and four RBI’s. His second home run of the game was a three run shot that gave the Fleet a 5-2 lead and tied the hits record. Cisson’s heroics were not enough as Erskine would lose a heart breaker 6-5 in 10 innings. He would break the record later that day with a double to left center in the seventh inning against Barton in the 13-2 victory giving him 357 career hits. Cisson would finish the tournament with two more hits against Anderson, including his 80th career double tying the career record in the 16-8 loss. Cisson is currently just six hits shy of his second straight 100 hit season and will look to keep the Fleet rolling in their final week of the season.

“We are extremely proud of Shelton, he has worked hard over the past four years and he is deserving of both of these records,” commented head coach Kevin Nichols. “We will truly miss his leadership and have enjoyed watching him play over the last four years.”

 

Fleet Battle Past Limestone for 3rd Straight CVAC Title

SUMTER,SC- The Erskine women's tennis team captured their third straight CVAC Tournament Championship on Sunday and extended their CVAC winning streak to 38 matches as they earned a hard-fought win over Limestone, 5-3.

Erskine picked up doubles win at the #2 and #3 positions to take a 2-1 lead into singles. #6 Miroslava Stojkovic, who made All-Tournament, picked up the first win with a 6-3, 6-3. #1 Jennifer Gennaoui got the 4th point with a 6-4.6-3 win over Limestone's Jennifer Snaider. That set the stage for Tournament MVP Kacie Knox to seal the title with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Stephanie Kragl.

Erskine will now enter NCAA Regional play next week. Site and date will be announced on Monday.

 

Fleet Softball's CVAC Run Ends vs Mt. Olive

HARTSVILLE,SC- The Erskine softball team picked up two huge wins, 7-1 over St. Andrews and 3-2 over Anderson, before falling in their 5th game of the tournament against top-seeded Mt. Olive, 5-2. Erskine went 3-2 in the tournament. Sophomore shortstop Katee Knapp was named to the All-CVAC 1st Team.

 

Fleet Baseball Hangs Tough at CVAC Tournament

WILSON, NC--The Erskine baseball team is alive and well at the CVAC tournament after two days of play. Erskine defeated Anderson, 11-6, in the first game and then suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Mt. Olive in the 2nd game. Erskine took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th only to see the Trojans score three runs to tie the game and win in the 10th on a homerun. Erskine re-grouped to trounce Barton, 13-2, on Friday night in the double elimination tournament.

The Fleet play Anderson today at 4:00 p.m. If the Fleet win they will play tonight against the Mt. Olive/Pfeiffer loser. Erskine will need to win four striaght games over the next two days to win the championship.
