Erskine College athletic department marks 2004-05 accomplishments

This year's Erskine College athletic department banquet was more celebratory than in years past, as Flying Fleet teams marked a number of accomplishments during the 2004-05 year.

Athletic Director Mark Peeler, also the school's men's basketball coach, is nearing the end of his first full year as director of the athletic program. He thanked the coaches and students for turning "what I thought was going to be a miserable experience into a rewarding professional experience."

"This has been a fantastic year for Erskine athletics," Peeler said. The women's tennis team, 22-1, captured the school's first-ever CVAC regular season title and the tournament title and will play this weekend in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The baseball and softball teams finished second in the conference, respectively, while the men's and women's basketball teams both finished fourth in CVAC and the men's soccer team qualified for the postseason conference tournament.

"We've been somewhere we've never been before," Peeler said. "We're headed in the right direction, proving that athletic achievement can be done in the right way, with Christian commitment and excellence in the classroom."

Peeler, Maggie Peeler (women's basketball), Kevin Nichols (baseball), Alleen Hawkins (softball), Ben Freakley (men's soccer) Serge Lipovetsky (women's soccer), Calhoun Parr (women's tennis), Vardon Cox (men's tennis), Jeff Schrage (men's and women's cross country) and Toby Harkins (athletic trainers) recognized their teams and awarded their achievements.

Senior cross country runner Jessica Martin was the most decorated individual at the banquet, carrying away the Jake Todd Award, the highest honor an Erskine student-athlete can receive.

The award is named for Coach Jake Todd, who served Erskine athletics from 1926-41. He coached freshman teams for two years, and then in 1928 became the head football, basketball and baseball coach. The award, established in 1969, recognizes outstanding leadership, character, sportsmanship, academic achievement and athletic ability.

In addition to winning the Todd award, Martin was honored as most valuable player of the women’s cross country team and for being selected as a member of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team and the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Association Academic All-American Team, CVAC Runner of the Week, First Team All-Conference and All-Southeast Region Team.

While team and individual recognition were the primary purposes of the evening, a couple of special presentations also highlighted the banquet.

Flying Fleet Club President Steve Southwell presented Erskine President John L. Carson with a lifetime membership in the club in recognition of his support of Flying Fleet teams and student-athletes. Carson has announced he will step down as president in June.

Also, visitors from Anderson College were on hand to make another special presentation of the Anderson-Erskine Cup — won last year by Anderson but returned this year to Due West. Anderson College Athletic Director Bobby Beville, an Erskine alumnus, and Food Service Director Greg Quarles presented the cup to Erskine Food Service Director Randy Moore, who honored an earlier promise to do a dance and song.
