The Rev. J. Allen Derrick

Erskine College and Seminary commencements set

Commencement ceremonies for Erskine College and Seminary are scheduled for Saturday, May 14, and Sunday, May 15, respectively.

The college baccalaureate ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. May 14 at Due West ARP Church, and college commencement will begin at 1:30 p.m. that same day under the Towers.

Baccalaureate preacher is the Rev. J. Allen Derrick, who is completing a term as secretary of the Erskine Board of Trustees. He serves as pastor of Associate Reformed Presbyterian congregations in Union and Edgemoor and for many years has been involved in youth conferences and retreats for the ARP denomination. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Erskine in 1997.

College commencement speaker is Erskine College and Seminary President Dr.  John L. Carson and honorary degrees will be presented to Charles Carlisle (doctor of humanities) and C. Jan Westmoreland (doctor of humanities).

Carson, Erskine's 13th president, recently announced plans to step down June 30. A 1967 graduate of Erskine College and former member of the Erskine Seminary faculty, he earned a Ph.D. from Aberdeen University in Scotland. Carson, who is an ordained Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister, has served as president since 1998. During his tenure, Erskine has enjoyed record enrollment increases in the college and seminary; has completed major campus improvements, including the renovation of all residence halls; and has launched the largest capital campaign in its history.

Carlisle, who lives in Due West, is a graduate of Newberry College who served Erskine first as an assistant professor of history, then for 35 years as chief financial officer, helping to guide three capital campaigns. His extensive community service includes planning and fund-raising for the Due West Retirement Center, where a nursing center was named in his honor in 1999.

Westmoreland, a native of Greer, is a 1959 graduate of Erskine College who achieved distinction in a career in public affairs with Pfizer Inc., retiring in 1993. In 1997, he established the Westmoreland Performing Artist Program at Erskine and now serves as honorary chairman of the Memorial Hall project to renovate and expand Erskine's music facility. The Memorial Hall project is part of the Gold Campaign, Erskine's current capital campaign.

Seminary commencement is slated for 4 p.m. May 15 at Due West ARP Church.

President and Professor of New Testament Emeritus Dr. Thomas W. Gillespie of Princeton Theological Seminary is seminary commencement speaker, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree will be presented to Dr. Luder G. Whitlock Jr.

Gillespie served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Garden Grove, Calif., from 1954-66 and as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Burlingame, Calif., from 1966-83. He was adjunct professor at San Francisco Theological Seminary from 1972-73 and at Fuller Theological Seminary from 1973-78. He served Princeton Theological Seminary as president and professor of New Testament from 1983-2004.

Whitlock, for more than 20 years president of Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Fla., and now president of Excelsis, an educational materials company, has been active with Association of Theological Schools and on the boards of a number of institutions, including Covenant College, Westminster Theological Seminary, and other institutions. He has also served on the boards of the National Association of Evangelicals, the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization and other organizations. He was executive director of The New Geneva Study Bible.
