Second-graders come to Erskine campus for "College Day"

As Erskine College students concentrated on final exams Wednesday, two second-grade classes from Diamond Hill Elementary School in Abbeville, with their teachers, Deloise Smith and Fonda Taylor, visited the Erskine campus for a "College Day" hosted by the Biology Outreach Program.

Erskine Professor of Biology Dr. Mary Lang Edwards and a number of Erskine students worked with the children. Sophomores Stephanie Cirilo of Orlando, Fla., Caleb McMahan of Abbeville, and Josh Wicker of Sanford, N.C., led a group of more than a dozen student volunteers who assisted with specially designed classes for the visitors.

Edwards said after attending classes that included activities with "bones, snakes and creepy crawlies," the children had a picnic lunch at the Ellenburg Pavilion.

Leading the class sessions were Edwards, who spoke about the bones of various animals; Cirilo and McMahan, whose topic was snakes; and Wicker, who talked about insects, also known as "creepy crawlies." Each session allowed for hands-on experience with skeletal parts, live snakes, or exotic bugs.

The Biology Outreach Program, in which Erskine biology students and faculty members go into nearby schools and area school children visit the Erskine campus for science presentations, is an effort to make Erskine College "more of a presence in the community," Edwards said.

Since sending letters about the Biology Outreach Program to schools in three counties, Edwards has received a large response, and has a number of requests for visits next year. She said elementary school teachers eager to participate in the program believe children in the early elementary grades are not too young to think about college.

Professor Emerita of Biology Dr. Jan Haldeman helps with the program, and other students have also played leading roles, including sophomores Jason Broach of Timmonsville and Alex Gleason of Calhoun Falls.

Freshman Heath Whaley of Greer, left.
