Thirty-first Erskine Open draws 110 golfers

The 31st annual Erskine Open golf tournament drew 110 participants Tuesday to raise money for the Flying Fleet Club's Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet, scheduled this year for Oct. 8 during Homecoming.

Ralph Patterson, director of annual giving and alumni affairs, said this year's tournament had more participants than last year.

Hunter's Creek Golf Club of Greenwood was the host for the tournament.

Participants played 18 holes of golf on two of Hunter's Creek's three nine-hole courses — Willow, Oak and Maple.

"We appreciate Hunter's Creek opening all twenty-seven holes to us," Patterson said. "That allows things to go much smoother and more quickly. We appreciate their hospitality."

Winners by course with score in parentheses:

• Willow-Maple: John Carson, Steve Linder, Chris Smith and Steve Spoon (58).
• Maple-Oak: Al Banister, Scott Ledford, Tony Caricari, Steve Southwell and Jay West (60).
• Oak-Willow: Bill Robinson, Will Robinson, Keith Early and Jeremy Revis (56).

Closest to pin winners were Steve Spoon and Al Banister, while Matt "House" Wiggins and Shannon Bower took the longest drive awards. Wiggins' drive was 356 yards. Senior longest drive awards went to Tom Propst and Maurice Lopez.

A number of door prizes were handed out, including Flying Fleet memorabilia, such as embroidered golf shirts and sweater vests, Erskine hats, license tags, golf bags and golf balls. Erskine alumnus David Jones won a new putter courtesy of The Golf Doctor of Greenwood.

Neely Gaston was the winner of the inaugural putting contest.

Humorist Roddy Gray of Abbeville, an Erskine alumnus, emceed the post-tournament festivities.

Also on hand for the tournament was Whitey Adams, who started the Erskine Open 31 years ago.

Patterson said John A. Simpson of Due West wore the oldest Erskine Open hat, sporting headgear from the seventh annual event.
