Winter Term 2007 ecotour of Hawaii

Join us as we explore the wonders of Hawaii!  All majors welcome.  The trip is designed to appeal to anyone interested in learning about life in Hawaii.  Parents and friends of the college are also invited.

Highlights of the trip include:

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Visit steam vents where moist air will warm your face, tour the Jagger Museum where you can watch seismographs record earthquakes right under your feet, walk to the edge of Halemaumau Crater and look down across this massive opening in the earth.  We will then head to the Thurston Lava Tube in the middle of a tropical rain forest and actually walk through this 300ft. cavern where lava flowed thousands of years ago.

Snorkeling Adventures at Captain Cook

During the morning hours, you will have an informative Marine Biology Workshop to learn about marine life found in Hawaiian waters.  After lunch, depart for Keahou Bay where you’ll board the Fairwinds Snorkel  Cruise to Historic Kealakekua Bay where Captain Cook first discovered Hawaii in 1777.  You’ll explore lava tubes, see sea turtles, spinner dolphins and maybe even a humpback whale or two.

Iao Valley Waterfall Hike

Here is where you will explore the valley with your naturalist guide learning about Hawaii’s flora, fauna and native bird species.

Haleakala "The House of the Sun"

Depart for Haleakala for your Sunrise Downhill Bike Ride. It is super chilly at 10,000-ft. elevation, so make sure to dress warmly. After the spectacular sunrise, you will jump on a specially designed bicycle and cruise downhill through 4 climatic zones.

• Waikiki

An expert guide will direct you up the 763ft. summit of Diamondhead where you will experience spectacular panoramic views.  After your hike you’ll make a stop at the Waikiki Aquarium.  Here’s where you will have a workshop on “What’s a Coral?” You will learn about Hawaii’s delicate Coral Reef System and feed live corals found only in Hawaiian waters.

Pearl Harbor, USS Arizona Memorial, and USS Missouri

Visit the sites of the beginning and the end of the United States’ involvement in WWII. December 7, 1941 is remembered as the “Day of Infamy” when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.  On September 2, 1945, U.S. General MacArthur, other Allied delegates, and Japanese officials signed the Instruments of Surrender to end WWII aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
