06.29.05 Jared Wix Rising junior releases new music CD Jared Wix of Simpsonville, who recently completed his sophomore year at Erskine College, has released his first CD album, "Gravity," according to a cover feature by Brad Bryant in the May 28 issue of The Laurens County Advertiser. Lorando Lockhart also interviewed Wix for a May 3 story in the Simpsonville Tribune-Times. The CD features eight tracks, all written and performed by Wix. He describes his songs as "jazzy, blues-rock and acoustic lounge music in the vein of Eric Clapton, John Mayer and Charlie Hunter." Erskine classmate David Dorn, a rising junior from Calhoun Falls, helped produce the album, with Wix providing the vocals and instruments and Dorn "working to mesh everything together in the studio," Wix told Bryant. The album cover was designed by Wix's fiancée, Kimberly Callahan. Wix said his mother, Krista Wix, provided financial assistance. Wix, who recently turned 20, said that as a young teenager, he often used his family's vehicles as drums until at the age of 14 he was given a drum set. Five years later, Wix has learned to play the bass and guitar and is trying out the piano as well. Initially, Wix performed songs written by others. He described to Lockhart his first attempts at writing songs of his own. "It was a slow process at first and I threw out many songs, but when I would write something and I would sing it in my head for days, then I knew it was good," Wix said. "I love music. I love to listen to a good song and dissect the parts that make me want to hear it again and again. I try to emulate that when (I'm) building my own songs." At Erskine, Wix is majoring in business administration and told Lockhart he can envision himself as the owner of a jazz club. For now, he is content to travel around South Carolina performing and selling his music. Wix has participated in a Battle of the Bands and several open-mic nights at Erskine and also performed at the Erskine College-Due West Relay for Life April 29. In a recent update to his Web site, Wix notes that tracks from "Gravity" will be played on a radio station in England and can be heard online.
