07.13.05 Katie Ellis, second from right, pictured with summer campers Erskine students offer their talents at Bonclarken camps Erskine College students Katie Ellis, Rebekah Lewis, and Josh Valentine are serving as summer interns at Bonclarken, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian conference center in Flat Rock, N.C. They recently conducted a camp for middle school students called "Focus," reports Davey Morgan, a rising junior from Taylors who is serving as a photographer with Covenant Discipleship. "Focus" is one of several camps and conferences at Bonclarken sponsored by Covenant Discipleship, and is described by Executive Director David Vickery as "an opportunity to build faith through being of service to others." Morgan said Erskine students Jamey Dagenhart, Jonathan Dix, Austin Johnston and Bethany Roach and 2005 graduate Caleb Gamble also helped with the camp. Dagenhart, a rising sophomore from Rock Hill, said he works on the recreation staff at Bonclarken, and has found it a rewarding experience. "One of the joys of my job is that I get to see the campers push themselves to the limit," he explained. "I'm always amazed at how many campers are terrified to attempt the ropes course or the climbing wall but are successful in doing so." Dagenhart said he works at different camps each week. Just as he loves seeing "the joy in their eyes" as campers push themselves to overcome obstacles, he has been thankful to find the energy to meet his own challenges. "While working the various camps my days usually run from six or seven in the morning until midnight," he said. "There are many days where I wouldn't be able to make it except because of the strength that Christ gives me." Morgan describes his experience at Bonclarken as "awesome." His official job is to photograph all events at the camps run by Covenant Discipleship during the summer. He also works on publications, serves as a computer technician, and enjoys fellowship with the campers. So far, "Camp Joy has been my best experience," Morgan said. Camp Joy, for the mentally handicapped, pairs a counselor with one camper, and Morgan said he joined with "his" camper in everything he did at camp. "I have been having the best time with the crafts, Bible lessons, recreation and all the other things we have done," he said. Morgan said he is learning to "try my best with the talents and abilities I am given and try to improve on areas that I am weaker in," and added, "I have also learned that I can trust God in anything I do." Interns and helpers, including photographer Morgan, went on a mission trip to Harrogate, Tenn., and surrounding areas last week, where they led Vacation Bible School for area children. Some of the Erskine students who participated in the Appalachian mission trip will embark on a mission trip to Wales shortly after they return from Tennessee.
