Erskine's inaugural "Walking Challenge" celebrated Six teams of 14 members each – a total of 84 faculty and staff members – participated in a recently concluded 14-week walking challenge at Erskine College and Seminary. The teams' achievements were celebrated Aug. 3 in a luncheon that included the announcement of winning teams and individuals. The winning team, "Short Bus," with captain Randy Moore, made up of members of the dining hall staff, logged a total of 18,923,496 steps, amounting to some 9,462 miles. Each team member was given a prize bag that included a gift certificate donated by O'Charley's in Greenwood. "Short Bus" won out over "The Street Walkers" led by Gail Gambrell (12,555,359 steps); "Seminary Team" with captain Julie Nelson (12,221,382); "The Flying Feet" headed by Chrystal Bruce (12,165,953); "Shakers and Movers" with co-captains Angie McClain and Kathy Busby (10,978,757); and "The Jaywalkers" led by Jan Walker (9,283,495). The lead walker overall was Waymon Cunningham of "Short Bus." Top walkers from each of the remaining teams were Sara Morrison of the Flying Feet, Loyd Melton of the Seminary Team, Vardon Cox of the Street Walkers, Reynolds Valentine of the Jaywalkers and Roger Irby of Shakers and Movers. The walking program, now known as "Erskine on the Move," is part of the Erskine Wellness Committee's focus on the whole person—physical, intellectual, emotional, social, moral and spiritual. Members of the Wellness Committee include Dr. Robyn Agnew, Paul Bell, the Rev. Neely Gaston, Dr. R.J. Gore, Fred Guyette, Beth Hawthorne, Dr. Brian Henry, Dr. Steve Lowe, Dr. Mary-Ruth Marshall, Sherry Martin, Randy Moore, Julie Nelson, Paul Patrick, Amy Simpson, Reba Stille, Dr. Don Weatherman and Jeannie Wells. Lowe and Wells addressed the luncheon group, Hawthorne and Nelson distributed awards, and statistician Amy Simpson announced the walking challenge results. A banner was displayed, featuring an "Erskine Wellness" logo created by Dr. Steve Sniteman. A second walking challenge will begin Sept. 26 and will last for six weeks, and the Wellness Committee will host a wellness fair Sept. 21. "Debbie Sink from Abbeville County Memorial Hospital is coordinating the wellness fair … because of our official partnership with (the hospital)," Agnew said. The first "Wellness Wednesday" luncheon program is also planned for Sept. 21, with Erin English, Erskine graduate and recent recipient of a master's degree in public health from the University of Georgia, as guest speaker.
