Alumni Board members take a break during Saturday's meeting.

Alumni Board welcomes new members

The Erskine Alumni Board welcomed new members, heard a presentation on the Annual Fund and received a report on the Presidential Search Committee in a meeting Saturday, concluding an annual retreat that began with dinner Friday.

Alumni Association President Westley McAllister '89 of Mount Carmel conducted the meeting, and other speakers included Vice President of Development Lee Logan and Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Ralph Patterson.

"We're delighted to have you on your campus," Logan said. "Erskine is an institution that is extremely influenced by its alumni and has been able to complete some great achievements because of its alumni."

Jim Christopher '79 of Blythewood, Lee Duffie '91 of Greenwood, Harriett Smith Linderman '60 of Statesville, N.C., Lewis P. McKelvey '81of Columbia, Matthew Wiggins '96 of Laurens and P. Scott Williams '76 of Piedmont were welcomed as members of the Alumni Board Class of 2009.

Patterson's presentation on the Annual Fund was a review for returning members of the Alumni Board and introduced incoming members to the way the fund works. He said the "All-Star Classes" of 1953, 1960, 2004 and 2005 will be recognized for their outstanding Annual Fund participation during this year's homecoming celebration, set for Nov. 18. Homecoming dates now alternate on an annual basis between basketball and soccer seasons, respectively.

Providing leadership for the 2006-07 Annual Fund campaign are Erskine Seminary Dean Emeritus Dr. Randall T. Ruble '58 of Due West and Eleanor Chestnut Richardson '59 of Flat Rock, N.C., former Alumni Board president.

Patterson reported that this year's Annual Fund goal is $1.8 million. "Our big push for the Annual Fund is scholarships," he said, noting that this means emphasizing unrestricted gifts, which go toward scholarships. The Annual Fund met its 2005-06 goal of $1.75 million.

McAllister, who is now a member of the Presidential Search Committee, praised that group's decision to enlist the services of a consulting firm and said progress is being made. "Serving on this committee has increased my respect for it," he said. "We're on the right track."

Dr. Richard Taylor '69 of Greenville gave a report from the discretionary fund committee. Money in the fund is generated through the use of Erskine credit cards. He said he has received a list of "worthy projects" for funding from the Student Government Association.

Several alumni trips are in the planning stages and Patterson said the Ecotour of Hawaii, led by Dr. Stefanie Baker of the biology department, has room for several more travelers. He said shorter and less expensive alumni trips are also being planned.

McAllister urged Alumni Board members to attend chapter meetings in their areas. He asked each Board member to offer assistance to class representatives as they work to increase Annual Fund participation in their classes.

The Alumni Board has earned respect for its work from a number of Erskine constituencies, McAllister said. "They know that we're a group that can really make a difference."

The next Alumni Board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18.
