8.30.04 Students in Dr. Bill Evans' Old Testament Literature Class Erskine College Students Start Fall Semester The 179 members of Erskine’s Class of 2008 join Erskine College transfer students and returning upperclassmen as the school’s 166th year begins today. The formal opening of Erskine College and Seminary, featuring an address by Erskine President Dr. John Carson, is set for Sept. 7 in Lesesne Auditorium. Seminary classes start on the Due West campus Tuesday. "The start of the school year is always exhilarating," said Erskine Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Don Weatherman. "I always expect the challenges of the classroom to exceed every student's expectations so they can truly experience the joy of learning." Erskine College freshmen have participated in an expanded orientation process this year that has included meetings of the freshman seminar, intellectual competition focused on assigned debate topics, and even the physical competition of a raft-building contest at Lake Russell. "I enjoyed being with this freshman class," said Erskine Student Activities Director Brooke Clinton. "Their enthusiasm and willingness to try new things in an unfamiliar setting was impressive." "The freshman class appears eager to get on with the semester," said Weatherman. "We will evaluate the new orientation format and see how it worked as a transition to college life." Student Government Association and Student Christian Association leaders and Student Life Assistants, along with other student volunteers, have also been on campus for the past week to help with freshman orientation. Clinton praised the upperclassmen for their efforts. "Some 90 students worked unbelievably hard under the leadership of David Dangerfield, our new SGA president," she said. Erskine's traditional "Back to School Bash," planned for Friday evening, will be augmented this year by a "Battle of the Bands" scheduled for Saturday. "Twelve bands, a mix of Erskine student musicians and local bands, will compete for a cash prize," said Clinton. "This is the first time we have had this event."
