Duke Energy Awards Gift To Memorial Hall Project The Duke Energy Foundation has made a $4,160 gift to Erskine College that will be used toward the Memorial Hall building project. George N. Acker, district manager for Duke Power’s Anderson/Pickens/Oconee/Abbeville office in Anderson, made the presentation Friday along with South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Executive Vice President J. Wayne Landrith to Lee Logan, Erskine College vice president for development. Each year, Duke Energy gives a $60,000 gift to SCICU that is distributed to the 10 schools in its service area. Half of the money allocated to each of the 10 schools — Erskine, Anderson, Converse, Furman, Limestone, North Greenville, Presbyterian, Southern Wesleyan, Spartanburg Methodist and Wofford — is based on enrollment and 50 percent is divided equally among the schools. Acker and Landrith visited Erskine, Anderson and Southern Wesleyan Friday. Acker said the money is designed to “help provide a more educated populace.” Landrith said statistics show that slightly more than 20 percent of the people in South Carolina have a four-year degree and fewer than 10 percent have education beyond a four-year degree. “It is to all of our benefits to have an educated workforce,” said Acker, who is the chairman-elect of the SCICU board. Logan said Erskine would use the money this year toward the Memorial Hall renovation/construction project, one of a number of emphases in the school's current Gold Campaign. Acker said next year, Duke Energy is looking at designating the money for scholarships. He said the company wants to benefit students in certain majors, such as education and business, and others that advance the cause of a more educated workforce. “Both states we serve (South Carolina and North Carolina) deserve all the help we can give them,” Acker said. He said there are 550,000 Duke Energy customers in South Carolina. |
