09.06.05 Classes begin for Erskine Seminary students The Rev. H. Neely Gaston, executive vice president of Erskine Theological Seminary, was the featured speaker Tuesday at the opening chapel of the new academic year. Tuesday marked the beginning of classes for seminary students. There are 318 students enrolled in the seminary's various degree programs, according to Sherry Martin, director of academic services and registrar. Gaston told students during the opening chapel to prepare to be challenged. "In the coming year, you can expect to be challenged and stretched by Erskine's faculty," he said. "If you find the load becomes heavy, you can trust that this faculty will most certainly help you and not stand aloof." Gaston said the academic standards are high but the seminary's teachers are "first and foremost ministers in the church and their goal is to help prepare you for ministry." He used Matthew 23:1-12 as his scriptural reference for his sermon and said Erskine's contribution of food, clothing and special funds for the relief effort in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast is a sign that the seminary believes Matthew 23:8 — "You have only one Master and you are all brothers." Important dates during the fall semester: • Sept. 13, Formal opening of college and seminary • Sept. 15, Erskine Lecture Series • Sept. 16, Final drop/add day (schedule changes to existing registration) • Oct. 13, Erskine Lecture Series • Nov. 21-25, Thanksgiving Holiday. • Dec. 13-16, Final examinations |
