African artifacts from Ethiopia and Zaire are on loan to the Bowie Arts Center.

Bowie Arts Center's new exhibits "Get It StARTed"

A well-attended opening reception for the Bowie Arts Center Tuesday celebrated the center's 2005-06 theme, "Get It StARTed."

The reception served to showcase the center's new exhibits and introduce new students to the permanent collection.

Jan Walker, who succeeded Peggy Adams as director of the Bowie Arts Center in 2004, enjoys helping students and other members of the Erskine community become better acquainted with the center.

"I was very pleased with the number of students that attended the reception," she said. "We are having a diverse group of exhibits this semester, and I want to encourage people to drop in and see the new things."

Two new displays, the Olin Ellis Woodworking exhibit and a collection of African artifacts from Ethiopia and Zaire, attracted attention at the reception.

The Olin Ellis exhibit is described by Walker as "a spectacular display of exceptionally well made wooden toys" which she views as "works of art." The exhibit will remain in the center only through Sept. 30.

The display of African artifacts, lent to the center by Nancy McGill and Linda Coffin of Palm Beach, Fla., and Mary Jenkins of Due West, will be on exhibit through Dec. 9.

The Bowie Arts Center, opened in 1995, is a 14,000-square-foot museum and gallery built and endowed by gifts of more than $2 million from Dr. Marie T. Bowie of Iva. A collection of the late Dr. Wofford Baldwin’s mechanical musical instruments as well as collections of Dr. Bowie and Louise Bell is among the center's permanent exhibits.

An exhibit hall for traveling exhibits is named for Professor Emeritus of Art Felix K. Bauer, and the center also houses a state-of-the-art classroom. The Patrick Gallery on the center's second floor features works by artists from the state and region donated by Dr. Alex Patrick of Greenville, who has recently donated a number of additional works to the permanent collection.

Normal hours for the Bowie Arts Center are Monday through Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 2 to 4 p.m.; and the first Sunday of the month, 2 to 4 p.m. For more information, call Walker at 864-379-8867.
