09.13.06 Alumni from nearby communities attend first chapter gathering The first of five scheduled fall meetings drew some 50 alumni from the Abbeville, Due West, Ware Shoals and Belton-Honea Path chapters of the Erskine Alumni Association to the Erskine campus Tuesday evening. Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Ralph Patterson addressed the gathering in Moffatt Dining Hall, noting that new Interim President Dr. Randy Ruble is at work for the college and seminary, "and we are thrilled to have him." Patterson also reported on the return of students to the Erskine campus, with 603 in the college and 370 in the seminary, and spoke about the importance of the Annual Fund. "Our first commitment is to our students — it always will be," he said. "What Erskine should be about is making a difference in the lives of our students. Really, that is the role of the alumni association as I see it." Chapter members enjoyed an assortment of desserts and heard brief remarks from Alumni Association President Wes McAllister '89 of Mount Carmel, and from Ruble, a 1958 graduate of the college and 1961 graduate of the seminary who is a member of the Due West Chapter. Corey Anthony '99, who serves as chapter meetings and communications coordinator in the alumni office, said everyone seemed to enjoy the food and fellowship. "It was very informal," he said. "Dr. Ruble joked that one of his goals as interim president is to stay skinny." Other chapters planning meetings for the fall include the Columbia Chapter, Oct. 24; the Greenville Chapter, Nov. 13; the Spartanburg Chapter, Nov. 14; and the Greenwood Chapter, Dec. 4. Patterson said several more chapter meetings would be added to the schedule in the spring.
