Erskine soccer coaches raising money for facilities

Erskine soccer coaches Ben Freakley and Serge Lipovetsky have hit the field running as they work to improve the men’s and women’s soccer programs. The first-year coaches are spending time beyond practice sessions and games to raise $13,000 for equipment for the Huggins Soccer Field on the Erskine campus.

The money will be used to purchase new benches, goals and a net backstop system – that stops balls that miss the goal.

In upgrading the facilities at Huggins, Freakley says the coaches are “trying to create a more professional atmosphere for our teams and visiting teams.”

Freakley said they want Erskine’s facilities not only to be the best in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference, but also, “the best facilities, period.”

Lipovetsky said the new equipment would also aid the coaches with their recruiting.

Freakley said the $13,000 represents about one-third of what that equipment usually costs, but the coaches have worked out a deal with Prime Stripe Inc. of Alabama.

The coaches said the primary group they are seeking help from is Erskine alumni. They are also targeting businesses for signage that will be placed on the fence around the field.

“All of it benefits the school,” Freakley said. “It will benefit prospective students. They want to play on a field that looks good.”

The coaches said they’d like  to make Huggins Soccer Field “a highlight” on tours when prospective students visit rather than a “passing moment.”

While the coaches are doing everything they can to improve the soccer programs for the long term, Lipovetsky says the field improvements can make an immediate impact.

“We want to be able to tell everyone that we have the best,” Freakley said. “It will make it more difficult for a prospective student to turn to another school.”
