09.14.05 Georgia Guitar Quartet to perform at Erskine Sept. 17 The Georgia Guitar Quartet will perform Saturday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. in the Bowie Arts Center on the Erskine College campus. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Erskine College students attending will be given convocation credit. The members of the Georgia Guitar Quartet, all graduates of the University of Georgia, formed their ensemble in 1996. The quartet performs regularly throughout the United States and received the "Best Classical Artist" award from the City of Athens five years in succession. The concert-attending public elects winners of this award. The repertoire of the Georgia Guitar Quartet includes classical music from the Renaissance to the present day and also explorations of jazz, bluegrass, ragtime and Celtic music. Included in the program at Erskine will be compositions by Michael Praetorius, Georg Phillip Telemann, Luigi Boccherini, Frédéric Chopin, Vince Guaraldi and others. The Georgia Guitar Quartet has performed at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston as well as at Christopher Parkening's master class in Bozeman, Mont. The group has released three recordings, with a fourth in the works. This event is part of the Erskine Fine Arts Series, presented on behalf of Erskine College as a service to the college and community. |
