9.15.04 Greg Haselden New controller settles in to additional responsibilities Greg Haselden’s first four months as controller in the business office at Erskine College have been busy ones. That’s no surprise for the Greenville native, but the responsibilities of his job have expanded since his arrival here in May. Haselden graduated from Furman University in 1994 and passed the certified public accountant exam that same year. He went to work for the Deloitte & Touche accounting firm’s office in Greenville. Deloitte & Touche was at that time one of the six largest international accounting firms, Haselden said. During his time there, Haselden served mostly eastern United States manufacturing and financial concerns. He left that firm as a senior accountant in 1998 and became the first director of finance at St. Joseph’s High School in Greenville. What he imagined would be a stay of a couple of years wound up being six years. During his tenure at St. Joseph’s, Haselden implemented a full accounting system, supervised several multimillion dollar construction projects, and managed the full financial system and reporting for the school. Haselden said he was approached in April about the possibility of coming to Erskine. “It was a natural step up as far as my career was concerned,” he said. “What I do here is basically the same (as at St. Joseph’s), except on a larger scale.” Haselden explained that the controller’s duties include oversight of the receipt of cash into the business office, as well as disbursements, and accurately and timely reporting to people here at Erskine and outside concerns. Over the past couple of months, those duties have expanded to include the bookstore, dining hall and human resources. Responsibility for the physical plant is split between Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Donald Weatherman and Erskine Theological Seminary Vice President the Rev. H. Neely Gaston. The business office also has responsibility for the bookstore, which is run by Vardon Cox, and the dining facility, which is managed by Randy Moore. The day-to-day operation of the business office is a team effort. “No one person makes or breaks it,” Haselden said. Martha Wood and Sarah Clark are accounting clerks in the business office, Kathy Banks is administrative assistant, Jeannie Wells is director of human resources and Dana Ellis manages the Belk Hall mailroom. The team effort will be aided by the hiring of James D. Barnes as assistant controller. Barnes started work this week. A graduate of Winthrop, Barnes has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s in accounting from the University of Georgia. Like Haselden, Barnes also worked for Deloitte & Touche, but they didn’t work there at the same time. Barnes has most recently been working for the McKinley Cooper & Co. accounting firm. Haselden said it is “nice and refreshing” to work in an environment at Erskine where “people are here because they want to be here — it’s more than just a job.” He and Barnes are both members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Haselden is also involved in civic activities. He is a member of the board of directors of the Greenville Chorale, as well as the Mardi Gras Board of Greenville, an organization he has also served as president. In his spare time, Haselden rates fishing as his number one hobby. He also enjoys biking, but moving into a new house is occupying a good bit of his leisure time these days. Haselden is also an adjunct instructor at Furman, where he teaches most of the courses in the accounting major in the undergraduate evening studies program. He has served in that capacity for six years. He said his job at Erskine offers a constant challenge. “The Board of Trustees approves the budget with input from the president, vice presidents and directors,” Haselden said. “The business office’s charge is to guide us to follow that budget. |
