9.16.04 Allison Open set for Sept. 27 The Allison Open, a golf tournament honoring Erskine Seminary Dean Emeritus Dr. Leon McDill Allison, is scheduled for Sept. 27 at Stoney Point Golf Club in Greenwood. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m., with welcoming remarks at 9:45 and a shotgun start at 10. Participants will play 18 holes, using a captain's choice format. The $60 entry fee includes golf cart use, driving range balls, refreshments before the tournament, a souvenir hat and a late lunch with awards given at 2:45 p.m. following the tournament. Proceeds from the Allison Open help fund the Leon McDill Allison Scholarship. The Rev. H. Neely Gaston, vice president of Erskine Seminary, conceived the idea for the Allison Open, which first took place last year. "This golf tournament is a great way to support several things — to pay tribute to the long-term ministry and service of Dr. 'Dill' Allison, to recognize his great love of the game of golf, and most importantly, to assist students through the proceeds of the Allison Scholarship," he said. "Last year's inaugural Allison Open went well, so we decided to make it an annual event," Erskine Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Ralph Patterson said. "It is important from my standpoint to continue to raise the awareness level of all the great things that are happening at our seminary." "This is a great opportunity for fellowship with alumni and faculty and staff and for presenting the seminary in a different light," Gaston said. "The fact that Erskine Theological Seminary continues to grow at a rapid pace is a validation that we need to fund more scholarships," Patterson said. "The Allison Open is a fun event for everyone, and it is an important event because every dollar that we raise really does make a difference in the lives of our students." Allison served Erskine Seminary as vice president and dean from 1959-76 and as professor of historical and systematic theology from 1959-80. He laid the foundation for the accreditation of Erskine Seminary with the Association of Theological Schools and was also the first full-time professor with an earned doctorate to teach at the seminary. "Dr. Allison was my teacher here at Erskine," said Dr. Loyd Melton, who earned the master of divinity degree at the seminary in 1974 and has taught at the seminary himself since 1983. "He was able to take a theology as complex as John Calvin's and make it understandable to a country boy like me," Melton said. "There are few people I have ever known that I respect as much as I do Dr. Allison." A $10 fee will be added for reservations received after Sept. 20.
