Drummond Center to host S.C. Senate District 10 candidates Sept. 23
The Drummond Center for Statesmanship at Erskine College will host a conversation with Dee Compton and Floyd Nicholson, the two candidates for South Carolina Senate District 10, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the Carson Performance Hall in Memorial Hall on the Erskine campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The winner of the election between Compton, a Republican, and Nicholson, a Democrat, will replace Sen. John Drummond, for whom the Drummond Center is named.
Drummond is stepping down after serving in the Senate for more than 40 years.
The two candidates, both active in local government, will have an opportunity to express their views on public service, statesmanship and the needs of District 10, and will take questions following their remarks.
"This event will be conducted in the spirit of Sen. John Drummond," said Dr. Ashley Woodiwiss, executive director of the Drummond Center. "The evening will be a conversation, not a debate. It will provide citizens in the Senate District 10 communities an opportunity to learn more about these two candidates, one of whom will inherit Sen. Drummond's legacy."
Politics major Howard Wellons, a sophomore who serves as corresponding secretary of Erskine's Student Government Association, is looking forward to the Drummond Center event.
"This conversation will be incredibly interesting, because both candidates are players in local politics," he said. "These men are addressing issues like the preservation of Lake Greenwood's water.
"It seems like such a shame to me that these smaller races are ignored when they often have as much or more impact on local voters than state and national elections."
South Carolina's District 10 includes communities in Abbeville, Greenwood and Laurens counties. Compton serves as vice chairman of Greenwood County Council and Nicholson is mayor of Greenwood.
