High school students get a look at Erskine

Some 200 prospective students and family members visited the Erskine College campus Saturday for Preview Day, taking campus tours, eating in Moffatt Dining Hall, and getting a feel for campus life.

"Prospective students and parents not only tour the campus but also meet faculty, staff and current students," said Admissions Director Bart Walker, who believes Erskine does an especially good job of welcoming visitors.

"Our students are the friendliest and most helpful group I have ever worked with," he said. "And our faculty members do an excellent job in communicating our educational experience to prospective students and parents."

Registration for the day's events was conducted outdoors under the towers of the Erskine Building, where a brief opening program was conducted. "We had a great turnout and beautiful weather," said Kimberly Yates, who serves as admissions coordinator for campus events.

"From the college perspective, it's a good indicator of student interest," Walker said. "We know the student who attends an event like this is seriously considering enrolling and most will apply for admission and even make a second campus visit later in the year."

Campus tours followed by lunch concluded the morning, and afternoon activities included a parent panel in Bowie Divinity Hall on the Erskine Seminary campus as well as a student panel in Memorial Hall.

The parent panel, moderated by Walker, gave parents a chance to ask questions about student life, academics and other concerns. The panel included Executive Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Don Weatherman, Associate Dean of Students Penny Thomas, and Mickey and Lydia Baker of Simpsonville, co-presidents of the Parent Association Council.

While the parent panel was being conducted, a student panel that included current students April Clayton, Megan Graham, Simeon Harrar, Sarah Miller and Marshall Stein was moderated by Tobé Frierson, assistant director of admissions. "The students asked all kinds of questions," Fober said.

"We had sophomores as well as juniors and seniors," she added. "It seems that more and more students start looking at colleges earlier in their high school careers."

A faculty fair and financial aid session were also offered in the afternoon.

A number of faculty and staff members as well as the "Erskine Ambassadors," student volunteers, assisted with Preview Day.
