Erskine students join work day efforts for evacuees

Erskine Dean of Students Dr. Robyn Agnew and six Erskine students, along with alumna Mary Jenkins of Due West, joined with members of a number of churches and organizations Saturday to prepare a camp for the arrival of Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

The Laurens Baptist Assembly led the workday at its Lake Greenwood site that will accommodate eight displaced families during a transition period as they relocate to the Greenwood area.

Agnew said some 60 volunteers, including Jenkins and Meeka Dubose, Rachel Jackson, Nikki Lee, Andrea Martin, Curt Miller and Ashley Waldemeyer, worked on cleaning, demolition, painting, carpentry and floor finishing.

"The Laurens Baptist Assembly camp is right on Lake Greenwood, so the view was quite nice and the water looked inviting, especially considering the temperature approached 95 degrees on Saturday," Agnew said.

Previously scheduled Erskine activities Saturday kept some students from volunteering, but Agnew believes they will have another opportunity.

"Most likely another work day will be needed on the 24th (of September)," Agnew said. "Several students that had Preview Day and OAU (Onward and Upward) conflicts last weekend have said they'd like to participate in another work day."
