09.21.05 Erskine Seminary professor is Constitution Day speaker Erskine Seminary Professor Dr. Dale Johnson stepped out of the box but back into a familiar one Sept. 15 when he spoke during the chapel service at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, a school where he taught history for 14 years. Johnson was asked to speak in honor of Constitution Day. A professor of church history at the seminary and director of the Master of Arts in Theological Studies program, Johnson has been at Erskine since 2001. Johnson said Southern Wesleyan is required because of federal funding to present a lecture on the U.S. Constitution. During his talk, Johnson spoke about how Judeo-Christian principles shaped the U.S. Constitution, examining the biblical worldview of the Puritans and the rationalism of the Enlightenment that influenced 18th-century thought. Those worldviews were reflected in the development and wording of both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, he said. "They're incompatible documents," Johnson said. He explained that the U.S. Constitution "recognizes the doctrine of sin" and the need for laws in society, views not reflected in either the Declaration of Independence or the Articles of Confederation. Of note, he said, is that only eight of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were present at the Constitutional Convention, including Thomas Jefferson, who at the time was serving as ambassador to France. |
