09.26.05 Donations help upgrade Erskine soccer facility An effort to raise money to upgrade equipment for the Erskine College men's and women's soccer facility has been successful. Last fall, men's coach Ben Freakley and women's coach Serge Lipovetsky began working on raising funds to supply equipment for the Huggins Soccer Field on the Erskine campus. A year later, those efforts have paid off and the new benches and goals are on display at the field. "Erskine alumni — one in particular – really stepped up to help," Freakley said. "He really got it done." He said the donor preferred not to be identified. Freakley said last spring, it was looking doubtful that the money would be raised to make the improvements. "Toward the end of the (academic) year, we still didn’t have enough money for the benches," he said. "He asked us how much it was going to cost, how much we’d raised and wrote a check for the entire difference." Freakley said the new equipment adds a "very professional look" to the field. "It looks like a field that you would like to play and compete on," he said. The new equipment is also used as a recruitment tool. "The field is now a highlight of the tour when we bring in recruits," Freakley said. The financial help of Erskine alumni is essential in building the programs, he said. "There's no way we could do it without their support. " The improvements at the field are about instilling pride in the program, both among the players who are here and those who will be recruited in the future. "It's special to come out and train on," Freakley said. "Just looking at the field makes you want to play soccer." For alumni, he said, helping the programs today is about giving something back to programs that were good to them in the past.
