Erskine Wellness focuses on health with fair and luncheon Erskine Wellness and the Abbeville Area Medical Center sponsored the Erskine Health and Wellness Fair Wednesday in Watkins Student Center. The fair and a luncheon marked the fall start-up for Erskine Wellness activities. Dean of Students Dr. Robyn Agnew said she was pleased with the turnout for the fair as she introduced the speaker for this year's first "Lunch N Learn," hosted by Erskine Wellness. Erskine Health and Wellness Fair offerings included free blood pressure screening; several low-cost or free laboratory screenings; seatbelt and car seat safety checks; free literature on cancer awareness, diabetes education, nutrition, organ donation, rehabilitation, seasonal infectious illness, sexual trauma, sleep disorders, and substance abuse prevention and counseling; depression screening; body fat analysis; and a model and literature on breast self-exam and mammography. In addition to Abbeville Area Medical Center, community participants included Cornerstone; Mental Health America; the Sexual Trauma and Counseling Center; and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Convocation credit was given to students who attended the fair. A "Lunch N Learn" presentation in the Founders Room of Moffatt Dining Hall following the fair featured Connie Abbott, nurse practitioner for Erskine's "HealthSTAT" medical clinic. She offered advice on maintaining good health, including ways to reduce stress, improve nutrition, make time for exercise, and ensure more and better sleep. A graduate of the nursing school at Clemson University, she also holds a master's degree in nursing from the University of Central Florida. Hope Harrison, director of human resources at Erskine and a member of the Wellness committee, said plans are in the works to introduce a six-week exercise program to take the place of the walking team competitions offered during the past several semesters. "We wanted to add variety to the physical element of the Erskine Wellness program," Harrison said. "Walking is not the only option." The exercise program will be inaugurated in October.
