Erskine students square off in 2004 Medieval Massacre

Medieval theme inspires Erskine Homecoming

Erskine College Homecoming is set for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, and the Spirit Committee, led by junior Alex Gleason, is scheduling activities based on this year's medieval theme. SGA President Mackay Smith said a "Medieval Massacre" is one of the events planned for homecoming.

The warm-up for "Ye Olde Homecoming 2005" begins Monday, Oct. 3, with Favorite Decade/Era Day. Tuesday is Crazy Hat or Accessory Day, Wednesday is Medieval Day, Thursday is Dress for Success Day and Friday is Maroon 'n' Gold Day.

"Watch for games in Moffatt," Gleason said. "We'll be sending out e-mail reminders next week about dressing up and other activities."

Gleason said he and his committee are working to make this 84th Erskine homecoming a great experience. "I'm hoping we get a larger turnout for homecoming events this year," he said. "I'm so proud of our Spirit Committee's efforts."

Spirit Week preparation culminates in Erskine's traditional float-building contest, "Fleet-O-Rama," which begins Friday at 9 p.m. behind Robinson Dormitory. Classes and organizations compete to create the best float for the homecoming parade.

"Fund the Fleet" at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six is also set for Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. This golf tournament for alumni and friends helps raise money for Erskine athletics.

Saturday's activities start with the Red Eye Ride, a bike race beginning at the Bowie Arts Center circle at 9 a.m. "We're making some improvements on the Red Eye Ride this year," Gleason said.

Registration and coffee under the towers of the Erskine Building are set for 10 a.m. The Erskine Alumni Board will also meet with class representatives at 10 a.m. in the Galloway Center.

Entertainment opportunities during homecoming include an Erskine Men's Tennis exhibition from 10:30 to 11:45 and "Kids' Stuff" in front of Lesesne Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The homecoming parade begins at noon on Main Street, followed by lunch on Huggins field at 12:30.

The Lady Fleet soccer team takes on Pfeiffer at 1 p.m., with the Flying Fleet men's game against Pfeiffer following at 3 p.m. At halftime of the men's game, the homecoming court will be presented and the homecoming queen crowned.
