Farm fun is theme of Erskine Homecoming 2004

Erskine's homecoming slogan this year is "Nothing Flies Like the Fleet," combining a farm theme with an emphasis on athletics.

"It's a play on the John Deere slogan, 'Nothing Runs Like A Deere,'" SGA President David Dangerfield said. "So each class is taking on a different part of 'farm' culture. We think it’s going to be a lot of fun."

Revving up with student activities throughout this week, the pace of preparation for homecoming builds through Friday, when the traditional Erskine "Fleet-O-Rama" is set to begin at 7 p.m.

"I can't overemphasize Fleet-O-Rama," Dangerfield said.

"Each class comes out to Robinson Field to decorate their floats and engage in competition games," SGA Vice President Caroline Williams said. "These include football and tug-o-war, and we'll also have a bonfire with s'mores that night. It's great fun and fellowship, competition between the classes — plus it's tradition!"

Williams said games in Moffatt Dining Hall this week are designed to encourage class spirit. "Our Spirit Committee has formed a point system to award classes for their participation throughout homecoming and whoever has the most at the end of the week will win a cash prize for their class."

An intramural football game Wednesday night and the third annual "Big Man On Campus" contest scheduled for Thursday evening are also part of the homecoming buildup.

Saturday's events begin with the Red Eye Ride, a bicycle race starting on the Circle at 9 a.m. Registration "Under the Towers" for returning alumni is set for at 10 a.m.

A baseball scrimmage on Grier Field from 9-11:30 a.m. and a men's tennis exhibition from 10:30-11:45 on the Sloan/Cox Courts continue the athletic focus.

The Homecoming Parade down Main Street begins at noon, with lunch on Huggins Field following at 12:30 p.m.

Also on Huggins Field, a women's soccer match at 1 and a men's match at 3, both against CVAC rival Lees-McRae, and the presentation of this year's Homecoming Court during halftime of the men's game will highlight the day.

Erskine Annual Fund and Alumni Affairs Director Ralph Patterson is enthusiastic about homecoming events. "Our Red Eye Ride at 9 a.m. will be exciting and fun to watch," he said. "It will be 'criterium' style, which means it will be several laps around the course, and that will allow friends and spectators to follow the progress of the race from one spot."

Patterson said entertainment for children will also be part of homecoming activities. "We will have the giant inflatable kids stuff on the field between the Pavillion and Lesesne Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.," he said. "The inflatables were a huge hit at last year's homecoming and alumni day, and we're happy to provide them again for the kids. Please come back to campus, and bring your children."

A homecoming emphasis on Erskine sports offers several opportunities for spectators, concluding with the day's soccer matches. "We encourage all our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to come out to support our teams," Patterson said. "Both of our soccer teams will play hard, and we hope to have a great turnout.

"The weather is supposed to be great," he added. "The Clemson football team doesn't play, and USC's game isn't televised, so come support our Flying Fleet."

"Homecoming is just a treasured experience — you shouldn't miss it," Dangerfield said.
