The day was marked by the crowning of senior Brittany Marie Mallard of Lexington as homecoming queen during ceremonies in the Galloway Center. Men's and women's soccer matches against CVAC rival Pfeiffer were postponed owing to excessive rain, Assistant Athletic Director Tiffany Mast reported, and will be rescheduled. Special events during homecoming week included the fourth annual Big Man On Campus contest Thursday evening, won this year by sophomore Daniel Wells of Tampa, Fla. In another homecoming week event, a "Medieval Massacre" using weapons made mostly of cardboard and duct tape, senior Will Milks of Greensboro, N.C., emerged as victor. Saturday's events began at 9 a.m. with the third annual Red Eye Ride, a bicycle race starting at the Bowie Arts Center. This year's event featured a 28-mile race for serious cyclists as well as a less strenuous 2-mile loop. The fastest male rider in the 28-mile race was Greg Morgan '82 of Easley, with a time of 1:09.13, followed by junior Alex Gleason of Calhoun Falls, who finished at 1:09.31. Junior Kate Charlwood of Columbia was the only female rider finishing the race, coming in sixth overall with a time of 1:26.17. Registration and coffee followed the Red Eye Ride, the Erskine Alumni Board welcomed class representatives to a meeting in the Galloway Center, and alumni and friends enjoyed a men's tennis exhibition. The homecoming parade at noon featured floats built by each of the four classes and by campus organizations. Float building was the main activity of Friday night's "Fleet-O-Rama." A number of awards were given for Fleet-O-Rama activities, including "Most Creative Float Design," won by Habitat for Humanity, and "Best Non-Class Float," which went to the Euphemian Literary Society. Among the class floats, the seniors gained first prize, with the freshmen coming in second. The freshman class was deemed "Most Spirited," and junior Keith Robinson was named "Most Spirited Person." Mallard was crowned homecoming queen by Erskine College Executive Vice President Dr. Donald Weatherman and last year's queen, Polly Brown '05 of Abbeville. Also honored were seniors Elisabeth Lindsay Hunt of Mooresville, N.C., first runner-up; Nancy Hart Deal of Charleston, second runner-up; and Anna Kathryn Oates of Danville, Va., third runner-up. Representatives of 30 Erskine organizations and all four classes were recognized. During homecoming activities in the Galloway Center, members of the Erskine Women's Tennis Team were presented with rings commemorating their 2005 CVAC championship. Also recognized were team supporters Sonny Rhem of Greer and Jim Query of Columbia. The Flying Fleet Hall of Fame banquet Saturday evening honored several sports standouts from past years at Erskine. Next year's Homecoming is set for Nov. 19, as Erskine begins scheduling the event in a yearly alternation between basketball and soccer seasons. |
