Dr. Joseph Taylor Stukes

Former Erskine professor receives humanities award

Dr. Joseph Taylor Stukes, who served Erskine College as professor of history (1966-74) and vice president for academic affairs (1966-72) has been named one of this year's recipients of the Governor’s Awards in the Humanities, established in 1991.

Stukes was presented with the award during a luncheon Oct. 8 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia.

According to Randy Akers, executive director of the Humanities Council SC, Stukes was honored for "devoting his professional life to education, particularly humanities-based education."

In addition to his tenure at Erskine College, Stukes has taught at Darlington High School for Boys, Presbyterian Junior College, Lander University and Francis Marion University.

Since 1971, Stukes has conducted numerous travel study courses and tours, and since 1974 he has performed historical monologues based on such prominent South Carolina historical figures as Francis Marion and Joel Poinsett.

He has served on the Humanities Council SC's Speakers Bureau, has performed at the Greenville Chautauqua, and has his own series in Florence, "The Joe Stukes History Series," sponsored by Friends of the Florence County Library and First Federal. He is a past president of the South Carolina Historical Association.

A member of the Erskine Academic Hall of Fame, Stukes has also been honored by the annual Joseph T. Stukes Lecture Series, which brings a distinguished lecturer in history to Erskine College each year through a fund established by his former students and colleagues.
