10.17.05 Henry McClain Jr. Work under way on facilities management project Work has begun in earnest on a $400,000 project at Erskine College that will replace the 60-year-old facilities management building on Depot Street. Erskine College and Seminary officials gathered Monday in front of the old building, most of which is being torn down in preparation for the new facility. Greg Haselden, vice president for finance and operations for the college, said the project is way overdue. "The facilities building has been on proverbial life support for 10 years now," he said. "We just haven't had the funding to do anything." Henry McClain Jr., director of plant operations and maintenance, said the project would be done in three phases. Haselden said the first phase will require the bulk of the funding, about $300,000, which is being provided through remaining money from a 2001 bond issue and Gold Campaign donations. "Various donors will be recognized at a later time for their generosity," he said. While the facilities management team will provide some of the labor for the project, most of it will be done by outside contractors. "Several vendors are providing in-kind work to help make the project possible," Haselden said. In the first phase of the building, office space, workspace and storage space will be provided, as well as cleanup of the existing building that will remain in place. Phase two of the project is a new roof for the existing building that is remaining and phase three will include "ongoing office enhancements," Haselden said. The first phase of the project is slated to be completed by mid- to late-January, officials said. The remainder of the project will be completed as funding becomes available, Haselden said. "This will create a pleasant, conducive work environment for the facilities management team," he said. "They do a tremendous job." Others have been very helpful in helping this project become a reality, McClain said, including the Ellis family, which has allowed facilities management to use a building up the street from the college building. Also, he said, Hillard Allen has been instrumental in helping get the plans drawn for the building. "I thank God for everybody's prayers and the people who've been working to raise the money," McClain said, citing Haselden, the Rev. Neely Gaston, executive vice president of the seminary, and Vice President for Development Lee Logan. "They really bent over backwards to make this happen." McClain said there are 33 people who work in the department. "This is going to mean everything to us," McClain said of the new building. "It will give us an opportunity to serve Erskine better." |
