New athletic training club established

A new group chartered by the Student Government Association is aimed at Erskine students who are interested in sports medicine or athletic training.

Kelly Harkins, Erskine's athletic training curriculum director, is the faculty adviser for the group, called the Organization of Athletic Training Students.

"Most larger schools have some type of student athletic training organization," she said.

While the group is open to all students interested in athletic training, the primary focus is to allow students to network with other athletic training students and those already in the profession who could someday be in the position to hire them.

They will accomplish this by traveling to athletic training conferences and participating in those programs.

"It is geared more toward certified athletic trainers," Harkins said. "It gives them a chance to see what their profession is all about."

Toby Harkins, athletic training director and assistant director of athletics, says the organization will be beneficial to students.

"This gives them opportunities for leadership and to be proactive with their careers," he said. "It gives them opportunities to see what else is out there."

The group will also undertake a fund-raising effort as part of its focus, because the cost of attending conferences will have to be raised by the students.

Kelly Harkins said she hopes to begin fund-raising soon, since the first conference she would like for the students to attend takes place in February. "We're brain-storming right now," she said.

The group has already elected its first set of officers. President is Jason Windley, vice president is Tuesday Patterson, secretary is Rachel Geoghegan and treasurer is Garreth Smoak.

Organization meetings are set for 7:15 a.m. every other Monday.

There are 18 students – sophomores, juniors and seniors — currently in the athletic training program. Freshmen are not allowed to enter the program until the spring semester of their first year.

Erskine's athletic training program has been nationally accredited since 2001.

For more information about the organization, contact Kelly Harkins at 864-379-6614 or one of the group's officers.
