10.22.04 Board member Mabel Purkerson Erskine trustees learn of growth, expansion of seminary programs The explosive growth of Erskine Theological Seminary was reported Friday to the Erskine Board of Trustees. The seminary experienced its largest new student enrollment in its history this fall with 172 new students and a total of 362 students enrolled. The board also learned of the four-year Army contract to educate chaplains, the renovation of Bowie Divinity Hall and McQuiston Hall, and the establishment of new off-campus sites in Columbia, New York City and Augusta, Ga. The first group of chaplains was on campus in July and will return in January 2005. The next group is scheduled to arrive in July 2005. Dr. Mark Ross is the first resident associate professor of theology at the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, Dr. Douglas Culver, professor of Old Testament and R.W. Carson Chair in Evangelism and Church Planting is heading up the pilot program in New York, and First Presbyterian Church in Augusta has partnered with Erskine Seminary to provide facilities for that extension site. Barry Dagenhart, chairman of the seminary committee, said a list of short- and long-term goals to address the seminary’s needs has been compiled for consideration. Dagenhart and Board Chairman John Moore will begin the process of helping the board determine the best course of action. In other business, the board: • Approved the 2004-05 budget. • Approved a motion that a groundbreaking will occur when 100 percent of the funds have been raised (cash and pledges) for the Memorial Hall project. • Authorized the granting of degrees to students approved by the faculty for graduation in January 2005. • Received a report from President Dr. John L. Carson, who said the increased amount of time he spends on the road raising money has led to the shifting of some responsibilities. Dr. Donald Weatherman's title has changed to senior vice president and dean of the college, while the Rev. Neely Gaston's title has changed to senior vice president of development and seminary. He cited progress in the Gold Campaign capital fund-raiser, meeting the strategic plan goal of 600 students and an "amazingly smooth year” in student services as highlights of recent months. • Recognized new board members Billy Barron, Ken Compton, Dwight Pearson, Gordon Query, Craig White, John Cook, Toney Parks, Calvin Todd, Kate Stewart, Bill Everett and Frank Hunt. • Authorized Gaston to initiate a search for new Old Testament and New Testament professors at the seminary. • Established the R. Thomas Nelson Jr. Scholarship Fund, the Dr. Alex Patrick Student Art Award, the Bradley-Klugh Scholarship, the Rev. Dr. Robert Joseph Robinson Family Seminary Scholarship and the Mayesville ARP Seminary Scholarship. • Discussed the importance of identifying potential donors, both those who have a connection to the college and those who do not, providing support to students by offering internships and externships, and the attendance of board members at future alumni chapter meetings. • Approved a motion to ask the administration to actively pursue providing more space for student organization meetings and student activities. |
