Erskine's Gold Campaign: One year later

Erskine College and Seminary began the public phase of its largest-ever capital campaign about a year ago and significant progress has been made toward achieving the goal by the Dec. 31, 2006 deadline.

Vice President for Development Lee Logan said since the kickoff on Oct. 23, 2003, the campaign total has increased by 55 percent — from $15 million to $23.3 million — of the $36.8 million goal.

There are eight blocks of emphasis in the Gold Campaign – Memorial Hall, Annual Fund, endowed scholarships and professorships, seminary, athletics, Drummond Center, Erskine Building and master plan.

"The public phase of the campaign has started," Logan said. "Everyone will be encouraged to give to the Annual Fund first and then the Gold Campaign."

The Annual Fund is a one-year pledge, while the Gold Campaign is a three-year commitment.

"The Annual Fund helps the college and seminary today," said Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs Ralph Patterson. "The Gold Campaign will help fund the future needs of the college and seminary."

Memorial Hall is the centerpiece of the campaign and pledges and contributions have increased significantly – from $1.7 million to $4.7 million of the $8.5 million goal.

Logan said the stature of the Memorial Hall renovation and construction project has "evolved through the obvious emphasis Memorial Hall received in the strategic plan" and results from actions taken by the Gold Campaign Steering Committee.

That project also now includes a math building thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Moss of Atlanta, Ga., who have pledged $1.5 million for that part of the Memorial Hall construction.

That allowed the goal to jump from $35.3 million to its current level. "It allows for the modification of Memorial Hall to add a math building," Logan said.

The Moss donation also matches the pledge made by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moultrie, honorary co-chairmen of the Gold Campaign, at last year’s campaign kickoff.

Memorial Hall is the "primary capital gift emphasis for the physical plant," Logan said.

College officials have set a tentative goal to have groundbreaking for the first phase of the Memorial Hall by mid-2005. "That's directly contingent on securing the additional gifts," Logan said of the goal for groundbreaking.

He said the emphasis for the non-physical plant needs of the college and seminary is on endowment fund scholarships, professorships and athletics.

Logan said the steering committee, led by Gold Campaign co-chairmen Joe and Kathy Black, has met several times since the kickoff.

Four members have been added to the steering committee — Richard and Janet Taylor and Andy and Tyree Byrd.

Logan said there are three primary goals for the Gold Campaign in the coming year — successful completion of the $1.6 million Annual Fund campaign, sufficient fund-raising for Memorial Hall to allow the project to move forward and a significant increase in gifts to the endowment fund.
