"Paul's Pumpkin Patch" by Paul and Jeannie Bell

Bowie Arts Center showcases creativity for Halloween

Bowie Arts Center Director Jan Walker makes sure that Erskine's arts center, home to a number of permanent and traveling exhibits, is a well-used facility.

Last week she announced the winners of the first "Boooowie Arts Center Pumpkin Carving Contest."  The competition, open to students, faculty and staff, attracted a number of entries that displayed painting and decorating flair as well as sculpting skills.

First prize, a $50 Outback gift certificate, went to "Cinderella's Pumpkin Coach," by sophomore Claire Parnell of Fayetteville, N.C. Her carved pumpkin, trimmed in lace and complete with glittery wheels, was decorated with dolls representing Cinderella and her footmen on their way to the ball.

Second prize, a $25 Outback certificate, was awarded to Erskine graduate Jeannie Bell, SI director at Erskine, and her husband Paul, also an Erskine alumnus and director of the Due West Retirement Center. They created "Paul's Pumpkin Patch," using paint and props on three pumpkins representing Jeannie and the couple's two children.

Another Bowie Arts Center event this fall began with Walker's call for artistic submissions from Erskine faculty and staff members. A reception Oct. 11 offered a look at faculty and staff works of drawing, printmaking, quilting, and graphic design. Dr. Robert Elsner, a new member of the Erskine College faculty, gave a culinary demonstration at the reception, spotlighting another form of creativity.

Elsewhere on campus, activities leading up to Halloween included the annual "Walking Ghost Tour" Oct. 26-27 with Ruth Burton, resident director of Carnegie Dormitory. Participating in this Erskine tradition acquaints students with myths and legends of Erskine College and Due West.

The freshman women of Carnegie plan to celebrate Halloween by offering hospitality to area children, distributing candy to trick-or-treaters from 6-9 p.m.
