Erskine welcomes more than 500 for Family Day

Family Day brought more than 500 guests to the Erskine campus Saturday as parents and other family members visited with Erskine students, enjoyed a picnic lunch, a silent auction, a shag contest, basketball and baseball scrimmages, and an equestrian team demonstration.

In addition to entertainment provided by a shag band, "The Fabulous Shades," Family Day featured performances by three Erskine vocal ensembles — the Fleetones, Immix and the Erskine Gospel Choir.

A faculty art exhibit, "Beneath the Surface," and Erskine's fall play, "Children of a Lesser God," rounded out the day's opportunities.

Associate Dean of Students Penny Thomas said 30 Erskine faculty members were available in their campus offices from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday to meet with parents.

This year's silent auction raised more than $6,000, Thomas said. Proceeds of the auction are used for the betterment of student life on campus.

"The hard work of the Parent Association Council and other families who contributed to the silent auction helped make this day a success," she said. "And the Erskine maintenance crew and our campus dining service, Aramark, were brilliant."

Also contributing to the day's festivities was the distribution of Erskine caps to parents who attended, courtesy of Joe and Kathy Black, co-chairmen of the Erskine Gold Campaign.

Family Day and the silent auction are among a number of activities planned by the Parent Association Council, led this year by David and Tracey Smith of Gastonia, N.C., who serve as co-presidents.
