Erskine lock-in draws prospects to campus

More than 100 high school students attended the 2005 Great Erskine Lock-In over the weekend.

Admissions Director Bart Walker said there were 105 students at this year's event. They represented ARP churches in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.

"We suspect many of these students will not only look hard at Erskine as a place to attend in the future, but several will likely enroll," Erskine Chaplain Paul Patrick said.

This year's speaker was Matt Lucas, an ARP minister on staff at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia and campus minister with Reformed University Fellowship at the University of South Carolina.

Lucas spoke to the students four times, Patrick said.

Student coordinator Jamey Dagenhart said Lucas "spoke about things that were relevant to the juniors and seniors in high school as they start to make decisions as they enter into the next chapter in their life.

"He spoke about how to live as a godly man and a godly woman," Dagenhart said. "He told the men what they should look for in women as well as what women should look for in men. He closed the weekend up by speaking about how as Christians we should live and how we have the opportunity to expand the kingdom of God."

Patrick said Lucas "brought the 'substance' of the Gospel through the course of the weekend along with a 'style' that was casual and easy to listen to."

Dagenhart complimented year's worship leader, the Jonny Diaz Band.

"They did a great job leading worship through music," he said. "They have an amazing gift for setting the mood for worship with the songs they sing."

Students got a glimpse of the campus and student life at Erskine and rubbed shoulders with current Erskine students.

Lucas "gave the potential students a helpful and realistic 'snapshot' of the kind of Gospel community and ministry that is being built at Erskine and of what they could expect to receive if they come to Erskine," Patrick said.

Led by Dagenhart, Erskine students administered the event, including skits, schedules, recreation and a multitude of other details. "Jamey did an outstanding job of handling details prior to and throughout the weekend," Patrick said.

Dagenhart termed the Lock-In a success. "Saturday offered a variety of events for the students to participate in," he said. "They had the opportunity to play ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. They also had the chance to go out and support the Erskine basketball team."

Patrick said the Lock-In, coupled with the Widow's Ministry, which brought 50 students to campus last week from South Lake Christian School, and Monday's Erskine Experience, in which high school students spend the night on campus and attend classes, "are signs of good things to come, thanks to the hard work of our admissions office."

Walker was quick to give credit for Dagenhart for his role in the Lock-In. "Jamey handled just about every administrative detail, including getting fellow students to volunteer," the admissions director said.
