Erskine hosts high school students for "Great Erskine Lock-In"

Erskine College senior Julie Russell of Rock Hill coordinated a team of student volunteers who assisted with the 2004 Great Erskine Lock-In for high school and college students Nov. 12-14. Admissions Director Bart Walker worked with his staff to contact churches and manage advance registration for the event.

Some 85 students visited the Erskine campus to participate in the lock-in. They were given commemorative T-shirts, and a band concert, skits, inflatable games, a bonfire and s'mores, and a pizza dinner were part of the weekend's activities.

Erskine Chaplain Paul Patrick said the purpose of the lock-in is "to provide a fun-filled youth event for high school juniors and seniors which brings them to our campus for a weekend of activity, while also giving them the opportunity to experience the campus, student body and atmosphere of Erskine College."

Russell contacted conference speaker Andrew Katsanis of Youth for Christ and also arranged for the Jonny Diaz Band to provide music. She said the band was chosen at the suggestion of the speaker.

"Julie did countless things, which included booking the band and inflatable games, organizing the Erskine student volunteers, leading the planning meetings, and managing the many details of the event," Patrick said.

Covenant Discipleship, the Board of Christian Education of the ARP Church, contributed about half the weekend's budget and the Erskine Admissions Office covered the remaining expenses.

"Covenant Discipleship, in addition to pledging 50 percent of the expense, also helped to place the order for T-shirts which were designed by Erskine students," Patrick said, adding that   the Rev. Bob Elliott, director of student ministries for Covenant Discipleship, offered to help manage the registration table at the event.

Russell, who did a summer internship with Covenant Discipleship, was delighted when the organization stepped up to help with the lock-in.

She also relied on a number of Erskine students for assistance, and was grateful for their help. Some Erskine volunteers were especially creative, she said.

"Mike Todd, Mackay Smith, Erica Johanson and Will Milks were in charge of the program, and they did the funniest skit I have ever seen," Russell said.

Both the speaker and band drew praise from students.

"Andrew Katsanis presented the message in a very effective and down-to-earth way," said Erskine freshman Jamey Dagenhart, who helped with the lock-in.

"It was great to have a good band here that was Christ-centered," said Erskine junior Megan Graham, who attended the concert. "They have a lot of talent and they were very real."

Milks, a junior, said this year's lock-in was "one of the best that I have attended or been a part of."

Visiting high school students got a good look at Erskine during the weekend, and Erskine freshman Joe Carvajal, a lock-in volunteer, believes some of them might decide they want to come back to the campus as entering freshmen.

"It was great to help out and be around prospective students," said Carvajal. "This past weekend could be the main factor in many students coming to Erskine."

Patrick expressed special thanks to the Erskine men's and women's basketball teams and their coaches, who moved their practice sessions off campus to allow visiting students to sleep in Galloway Gym.

"All the planning that went into it was worthwhile," Russell said. "Just to see the smiles on the faces of the high school students we had here made everything worthwhile."
